My surgery was well thought-through, very precise and the result was beyond my expectations. Mr Stafford combines innovation with a conservative, very safe approach. Pain management was excellent and well beyond expectations. I wouldn’t hesitate to repeat this surgery on my other hip if needed.

I am at risk of repeating the adulation expressed by other reviewers but praise of this sort cannot be repeated too often or too loudly. First, Giles Stafford himself. Of the many adjectives that could be used I’d particularly mention his professionalism, patience, attentiveness to my needs, friendliness, thoroughness and, not least, his aversion to surgery unless appropriate. The protocol and systems he has put in place are seamless and carried me effortlessly from pre-surgery briefing, though post-surgery care and rehabilitation. Like other reviewers I can only marvel at the process which has been pain free as well as hassle free throughout. I too was utterly thrilled to be on my feet within hours of surgery, crutch free within days and driving after two weeks – and, as I have said, pain free throughout. This review would not be complete without mentioning some of his support team – in particular Caroline, who is probably the best medical secretary I have ever met, and Sean who was so reassuring before surgery and a constant presence in the ward during and after surgery. If you have hip issues, I cannot imagine there is a better person to see than Giles Stafford.

If there were SIX stars - then Giles and his whole team (Sam, Caroline and Sean to name but a few) would get this and more. I had 'interviewed' several surgeons prior as I had a 40 year precondition with metalwork in place and a goal to be a mountain leader when recovered. I found that Giles and team took my wishes on board, expanded on those and came up with a great plan for a total hip replacement through to rehab. There was confidence, initiative and openess from the whole team that made the whole operation a resounding success and well above expectations so far in recovery mode.

We started with a very clear, realistic diagnosis and prognosis. Pre-operation we had further discussion about how the operation would be done and a full description of what to expect post-op. There was significant concentration on minimising pain, the point being that the body can adapt better to this strange implant if it is not declaring that the stranger to the body is causing pain. Early opportunity to 'bed in' the new hip produces speedier rehabilitation results. For my first hip replacement the time table was slightly better than predicted - just under two weeks on two crutches and just over one week on a single crutch. No real pain - just some stiffness. The return to full fitness for the first hip was fast enough to have the second hip replaced 10 weeks after the first. The second hip has been extraordinarily successful with two crutches only needed for three days after leaving hospital and a single crutch for only three days after that . So less than two weeks after the op. I was walking happily, unsupported , and with reasonable endurance. The two ops were exactly the same but Giles had found a new way of infusing pain relief in hospital and, most importantly, had been able to use his own combination of pain relief agents in the infuser (unlike op#1 when the contents of the pain relief machine were determined by the manufacturer.) The process has been hard to believe. I know many people whose hips have been replaced and I knew what was 'normal' and what to expect so this pain-free, accelerated return to fitness has been extraordinary and I am so pleased that I was able to become one of Giles' patients.

I normally don’t leave reviews but after 2 very successful hip replacements in the space of two years I feel I need to spread the word! Giles Stafford and his team at the Wellington Hospital made sure both my operations went ahead with minimum trauma, pain or fuss. My recovery with both hips has been phenomenal. I was offered all the support a person would possibly need both pre and post op. If you need a hip replacement, Giles is your man! Thank you Giles for all your care and support.
